How much does it cost to participate? The entry fee for the Don Noys Invitational Reliability Trial is set at $100 per team. This intentionally low cost covers the mandatory fees required to run a safe event and have access to the Kamas City Events Center . Our focus is on the community and the challenge, not profit.
What's included in the $100 entry fee?
Your entry fee includes:
Official entry into the 12-hour trial.
Professional scoring and route tracking.
Sweep Vehicle and minimal recovery support on the course.
Entry into the Welcome Mixer and Awards Dinner events.
A participants goody bag
What happens if I break down?
The goal of the trial is self-sufficiency and reliability. While we provide Sweep Vehicle recovery to ensure your safety and clear the route, reliance on the Sweep Vehicle is not recommended. Riders are strongly encouraged to carry their own basic tools and, most importantly a plan with their team for recovery and repair.
Do I need to be an expert rider to participate?
No. This is a test of reliability and consistency, not raw speed. While you need to be competent and comfortable riding your vintage scooter for hours on public roads, the challenge is maintaining the designated average speed. If you can maintain focus, manage your machine's mechanical state, and navigate effectively, you have a strong chance of a successful finish.
Do I have to ride the entire 12 hours?
No. In fact no rider can ride longer than 3 hours continuously. This is a team event, teams can be 2 to 4 members and everyone on the team has to ride at least one lap. Each team can decide how much or how little each member riders within the limits set in the rules.
How do I find teammates for my entry?
While you ride solo, the entry is $100 per team (one scooter). We highly encourage riders to develop roles within a team (mechanics, navigators, logistical aid) to assist with pre-event preparation, the Tech Inspection, and roadside assistance during the trial. We recommend posting on the major national scooter forums (LCUSA/VCOA) and joining our social media channels to network with other dedicated riders looking to form or join support teams.
What scooters are eligible to race?
Only Pre-1984, metal bodied, shifting scooters are eligible (this is generally going to be Vespa's and Lambretta's, but if you have another brand of scooter that fits that description you're welcome to join) . Your scooter must also pass mandatory technical inspection focusing on safety (brakes, lights, tires, etc.) and mechanical integrity before the trial begins.
Why is the field limited to 20 teams?
The field is strictly limited to 20 teams to ensure the event remains an exclusive, high-prestige trial focused on shared passion and mutual respect. Over time, our goal is to keep the event tightly-knit, allowing us to highlight the best riders, builders, shops, and part manufacturers who can definitively prove their reliability within a supportive community.
Can I work on my scooter at the campground or event center?
Yes, but officially designated workspace is limited. Minor maintenance and adjustments will be permitted during the Tech Inspection period on Friday evening and Saturday morning. The spirit of the event requires preparation before you arrive :) .
What do I win?
The overall winner is awarded the prestigious Ray Collins Cup, a perpetual trophy recognizing the team with the least number of penalties, the most number of laps and oldest winning in the event of a tie. More importantly, simply completing the 12-hour challenge earns you lifelong membership in the Stingray Society, the exclusive alumni group for all Don Noys Invitational participants.
Is the event supporting a good cause?
Absolutely. We keep the entry fee low to cover costs, but all extra revenue generated by the event is proudly donated to the Salt Lake Riders and Restoration Fund, helping to support the wider vintage scooter community. By participating, you are testing your limits and contributing to a great cause.
